Grateful for the Simple Little Things in September
The backpacks are out. The lunches are packed. Somewhere between the school supply list and the first-day photos, it’s easy to forget the simple little things are still happening right in front of you.
So here’s a short list for September. Nothing big, nothing complicated — just the little everyday moments that have been sneaking up on me lately and making this transition feel softer than usual.
The smell of new crayons.
There’s something about that scent — waxy, a little sweet, gone within a week. It shows up once a year and disappears fast, replaced by the smell of forgotten bananas at the bottom of a backpack. Catch it while you can.
The simple little things of a hushed house at 8:15am.
For the first time since June, the house is mine again. The coffee is hot when I drink it. Nobody needs a snack. It only lasts twenty minutes, but twenty peaceful minutes still count as one of those small ordinary joys.
The kid who actually wanted to show me their outfit.
Not every morning gets a runway moment. But when it does, when your seven-year-old spins in a circle in mismatched socks and asks “well?” — that’s a golden morning. Take the photo. Don’t fix the socks.
Teachers who remember names on day one.
Small gesture, big impact. It’s the kind of thing you’d miss if you weren’t looking — a teacher who learns your kid’s name before the bus even pulls away tells you something about the year ahead. Gratitude, right there in a hallway.
The first “good day” at pickup.
Not “fine.” Not a shrug. An actual, unprompted “it was a good day.” However the rest of the week goes, that one sentence is a tiny good thing worth holding onto.
Getting to start over.
New folders. Clean backpack. Nobody’s tardy yet. September offers this quiet permission to begin again, without the pressure of January’s whole “new year, new you” noise. If you want a little structure for catching moments like these as they happen, the Soft Landing Journal for September has daily prompts built for exactly this kind of noticing. Just an ordinary, soft reset either way.
None of this is Pinterest-worthy. No one’s taking a flat-lay of a lunchbox for this post. But gratitude doesn’t need to be big to count — sometimes it’s just a scent, a sock, a sentence at pickup.
What’s your tiny good thing this week? I’d love to hear it in the comments.
