Little Hope: Simple Gratitude Before Thanksgiving
Halloween candy is barely on sale, and my brain has already wandered toward turkey. Somewhere behind that, Christmas is clearing its throat. That’s the funny part about gratitude before Thanksgiving. It almost never gets a calm, empty week all to itself.
So this fall, I’m trying something softer. Instead of saving my thankful heart for one Thursday in November, I’m starting now. I’m practicing gratitude before Thanksgiving smack in the pumpkin-and-peppermint middle.
Gratitude Before Thanksgiving in a Stacked-Up Season 🍂
Officially, fall festivities kick off with costumes and candy corn. By the time I sit down to sketch a menu, though, gift ideas are piling up too. Then come cookie recipes, travel questions, and those “what does everybody want” texts.
It’s a lot to carry at once. And yet, none of it has to be carried together.
Early Thanksgiving gratitude helps me here. It isn’t about having everything handled. Instead, it’s noticing what’s good while the lists are still half-written.
The Year My Knee Met Our New Stove
Let me tell you about a November I’ll never forget.
I had worked hard on that meal. Every recipe was mapped out, and we’d just gotten a brand-new stove. I was so excited to use it.
The bird was carved. One dish (yes, only one) remained in the oven. I’d left the oven door open while I set the second-to-last casserole on the counter. As I turned back for the final pan, my knee connected with that door.
The edge sliced it open. Naturally, I put the food on the table, grabbed a towel, and planned to eat first. The ER could wait until after dinner, right?
My husband took one look and disagreed. We could see about an inch of gaping wound. Off we went.
Here’s the thing, though. Turns out, the ER is pretty quiet on turkey day. We were in and out in about two hours. They cleaned the cut (and soaked my backside in the process), then closed it with five staples.
Not exactly the afternoon I’d pictured. Still, I remember feeling grateful. I had a husband who wouldn’t let me be stubborn, a speedy visit, and a feast already cooked at home.
The Reservation That Wasn’t 🌺
Another year, we lived in Hawaii with only our two youngest at home. Family was an ocean away, and we had no friends nearby to celebrate with. So I booked a restaurant table a whole month ahead.
We showed up a bit early. The host told us they’d need about ninety minutes. Ninety minutes, with a reservation.
We decided the heck with it and walked out. At another spot, we waited about half an hour. The service was so good that we tipped our waitress 100 percent.
What Both Stories Taught Me
Neither holiday followed the plan. However, both left me with plenty to be thankful for. Gratitude before Thanksgiving doesn’t depend on the day going right. It shows up in the swerves, too.
That’s also why I stopped planning the whole season in one sitting.
Gratitude in the Holiday Lead-Up, One Celebration at a Time
The Soft Landing Thanksgiving Planner is built for exactly this. It gives this one holiday its own space, so Christmas can wait its turn. Inside, you’ll find a guest list, food and decor budgets, a shopping list, and a “Who’s Bringing What” tracker. There’s a day-of cooking schedule, plus gentle to-do lists sorted by how close the feast is.
My favorite part sits at the back. Reflection pages give you room to record favorite moments, even the ones that end in staples. Because being thankful ahead of the holidays includes remembering the times things went sideways.
A Little Thankfulness to Start With 🍁
Before the costumes come out, try a tiny bit of gratitude before Thanksgiving. Jot down three small things you appreciate today. Skip the big stuff and look for ordinary goodness in this in-between stretch.
- A cool morning that calls for a real sweater
- A candle that smells like cinnamon
- One free evening before the calendar fills up
Tuck those three somewhere you’ll spot them this week. Everything else can take a number.
